Community / Community Development
Over 20% of China’s population lives in extreme poverty. Most live in remote mountain areas. Yunnan Province’s population is 43% minority peoples who, because of prejudice and poor education are often at the greatest risk for poverty. Poor communities are often without access to healthcare, education, water, new agricultural technologies, and many other basic living necessities. Through Community Development projects, BCI is involved in poverty alleviation in such poor areas. BCI has brought drinking water closer to the center of dozens of villages, taught farmers better farming techniques, built schools where there were none, worked alongside villagers to bring roads and electricity into their area, and established medical clinics and practitioners who supply the health care needs of the villagers. We are training farmers in raising goats, chickens and pigs, as well as planting corn, potatoes, and other cash crops. Earthquakes frequently affect Yunnan Province. We are often asked by the government to be involved in earthquake recovery efforts, such as establishing temporary housing or the rebuilding of schools.
